Missing the Constitution?

In case you were wondering where the *real* defenders of the Constitution were at CSU, they were out at the Constitution Day Fair this afternoon! The LPCSU was the only third party to have a table there, and we went head-to-head with the Democrats and Republicans.

Oh, and we're at the top of the state party's "This Week in the LPCO" highlights, too.

One busy week:

On Friday, the LPCSU handed in the last of the paperwork required by Colorado State University to officially form as a campus organization. Pending approval by the student organizations office, we'll be officially registered with the university (not that not being official really stops us from existing!)

On Monday, LPCSU members travelled down to Lakewood for the executive board meeting of the Libertarian Party of Colorado. There, the LPCO board of directors unanimously approved the LPCSU as an official affiliate of the Libertarian Party. We also picked up more literature than we know what to do with, which is good, because...

This Thursday, we have a table at the "Constitution Day" event in the Lory Student Center Plaza. We'll be distributing literature, talking to people about the LP and the LPCSU, and giving the World's Smallest Political Quiz. That evening, we'll have a meeting at 7 p.m. at the usual spot (Newton's Corner; see below); the goal is to discuss activism plans...

Meeting report -- down with paperwork!

This afternoon, we approved a constitution and bylaws for the LPCSU and elected our first officers: Seth Anthony as chair and Samantha Sly as treasurer. (Speaking of official rules: Can you believe that CSU has a dozen diferrent hoops that a group has to jump through to form as a campus organization? Whatever happened to the right to free association? Not to mention the stack of paperwork -- at least four separate forms!)

So, yeah, we'll file the paperwork and be officially recognized, so that after taking care of the formalities, we can really start to focus on activism at CSU and in Fort Collins. Some of the things we've discussed taking on:

- opposing the "three unrelated" housing ordinance coming before the city council in October, which would impose greater restrictions on rental properties
- fighting the multiple tax increases on November's ballot (Referenda C and D statewide, "Building on Basics" here in Fort Collins)
- instant-runoff voting in campus elections
- pushing marijuana legalization efforts like those currently making headway in Denver
- organizing and participating in debates on current issues with other campus political groups
- bringing libertarian speakers to CSU for large audiences
- continued outreach on campus and voter registation drives...

... and that's just what we've had time to think up so far! Join us! Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 8 at 5 p.m. underneath Newton's Corner. In a few more weeks, we'll have a real meeting room!
