A shocking concept: rights for students?

Mark Brophy, a Larimer County Libertarian and a strong supporter of the LPCSU, has an article in this week's Fort Collins Weekly. He "radically" proposes decriminalizing alcohol and marijuana for young people, arguing that not only is choosing what enters our bodies our own choice, but that criminalizing these things make us all less safe:
"What happens when older people tell 18-year-olds that they are now adults and can be trusted with important decisions such as voting and serving in the military? These new opportunities fail to excite most young adults. But older people have excited them by restricting alcohol use to age 21, glorifying the act of poisoning yourself as a rite of passage to adulthood. [...] We should make Fort Collins even safer by reducing the alcohol age to 18. Students would consume alcohol in smaller amounts, and the principle of equal protection would be endorsed simultaneously with the rejections of nanny government."

Tonight, at the Larimer County libertarian dinner (6:30 p.m. at the Jasmine Garden, 2721 S. College), Mason Tvert, of SAFER Colorado (Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation), will be speaking about the statewide initiative to decriminalize marijuana.
