Meeting report -- drug prohibition must go!

The LPCSU met today at 7 p.m. in the Sunken Lounge of Lory. Agenda (PDF). In attendance: Seth Anthony, Zach Barnes, Amanda Broz, and Andy Nicewicz, as well as Mark Brophy from the Larimer County LP.

We decided that we were going to focus on one major event this semester, and narrowed it down pretty quickly to the issue of marijuana decriminalization, particularly in light of the statewide referendum being promoted by SAFER (Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation) and on the heels of the recent initiative which succeeded in Denver. The goal is to bring a major speaker from a group like SAFER to campus this semester and promote the event like mad...

Amanda and other students are also interested in starting a chapter of Students for a Sensible Drug Policy at CSU, and we want to support them in doing so. As an "educational," not a political group allied with us, they may have access to some funds and opportunities that the LPCSU won't.

Mark Brophy talked about upcoming Libertarian Party campaigns, and encouraged the group to take on the task of getting a city-wide referendum on the ballot to repeal the new "three-unrelated" ordinance, which prohibits more than three students from sharing a house. The LPCSU is strongly opposed to this sort of rank discrimination against students, as well as the abject violation of property rights, and although this project is a bit beyond our scope this semester, we want to keep this on our radar as a potential project for the fall semester and April 2007 city elections.

We also approved three amendments to the LPCSU constitution that were required by the student organizations office, regarding voting privileges (passed 4-0), removal of members (passed 3-1), and qualifications for office (passed 4-0), and agreed to meet again in two weeks.

We'll continue to plan... if you want to be involved, make sure you're on our discussion list where most of the non-meeting planning activities will take place, and come to our next meeting on February 23.

Please ask Amanda and whoever else is interested to get in touch with me at the SSDP National Office to facilitate starting a chapter!
